Federation: Piracy is an expansion and requires the base game of Federation to play.

In the follow-up to the popular game, Federation, Federation: Piracy upgrades components, introduces 2 new modules, and provides a solo mode to the game, adding new, interesting choices and challenges. The new modules can be played separately or together, and can be added to the new Solo game.

In the Piracy module, new 1-time actions are added to each of the planets’ locations.  These actions tend to be more powerful, but they can only be performed once by each player, so choosing when to enact these options is crucial to success.

With the AI Assistant module, at the point that a player first increases their Assistant die, they receive one of several unique AI Assistants. The player then has the new decision each round of whether to use their die to augment the vote of one of their Ambassadors in the Senate, or to assign the die to their AI Assistant to the player, providing increasing benefits as the die is increased throughout the game. These benefits vary depending on the Assistant, but they could increase a player’s Authority, provide additional resources, give special influence, allow additional actions, and many more. Deciding when to assign their die, and how, adds a new exciting dimension to the game.

In the new Solo Mode, the player starts with a deck of cards. Each round, a card is revealed which gives the player a choice of bonuses. The player rolls dice to determine the possible locations where actions can be taken. As additional cards are played, they will increase the majority that the player will have to beat to claim the points for each senate floor at the end of the round. The cards also affect which law is passed at the end of each round, as well as which projects are funded at the end of the game.
